1416736 Measuring liquid level electrically AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [15 March 1972] 12150/72 Heading GIN A liquid container incorporating a sensing device for controlling an indicating device provided information as to whether liquid in the container 12 is above or below a predeterminded level comprises a thermistor 13 incorporated in a corner 14 of plastics material mounted in an aperture formed either in the wall of the container or in a closure member (e.g. a filler cap) for an opening in the wall of the container, the carrier having terminals 21 elecrically connected to the thermistor and which are external to the container and that part of the carrier that is in direct contact with the edge of the aperture is formed of the plastic material, the resistance of the thermistor varying according as to its immersion or non-immersion in the liquid. The thermistor is arranged in a circuit with a lamp 26 which since the themistor has negative temperature coefficient of resistivity, is illuminated by increase in current due to increase in temperature of the themistor. A switch 28 when closed short-circuits the thermistor, permitting testing of the lamp. The carrier may be a snap fit in the container by means of a co-operating groove 18 and rib 24 or it may be mounted to the container, where both carrier and container are of thermoplastic material e.g. polythene or polypropylene, by welding. The carrier may be a thermosetting phenolic resin.
