Abstract

1416645 Anti-lock wheel braking systems ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 15 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 12530/73 Heading F2F A fluid braking system provided with a wheel anti-locking device for a motor vehicle has a return line 7 for the brake pressure medium which is transmissable from the brake line 3 during an anti-locking operation to a low-pressure reservoir 9, a sensor for monitoring the rotational speed of the wheel of the vehicle, and two, two-port, two-way solenoid valves 4, 8 controlled by the sensor. One valve is used for controlling the throughflow of medium through the brake line 3 and has a first valve setting for free flow of medium therethrough and a second setting for flow of medium therethrough by way of a throttle 5 in the valve, the other valve 8 controlling the outflow of medium to the reservoir. As shown, a tandem master cylinder 1 pressurises lines 2, 3 leading, respectively, to front and rear wheel brake cylinders and medium is pumped back to the line 3 by a pump 12 driven by a cam 11 rotated by a vehicle wheel. In an alternative arrangement the pump and non- return valve 10 are dispensed with. During normal braking, the valves 4, 8 assume the position shown in the Figure and the reservoir 9 is empty. If a rear wheel of the vehicle locks, the valves are energized by the sensor, which monitors the rotational speed of the wheel, when the valves assume a second setting in which valve 8 is in a through flow mode and pressure in the brake line 3 is reduced more quickly than it is supplied by way of the throttle 5. After an elapse of time the valve 8 is de-energized by an electronic switch device and returns to its starting position so that brake pressure again increases.
