Abstract

1416073 Brake-lining wear-indicators GIRLING Ltd 12 March 1974 [17 March 1973] 12971/73 Addition to 1344062 Heading F2E A vehicle brake fitment comprises a wear-adjustment means comprising two parts adapted to be fitted between a location and a brake member which moves relative to the location and normally abuts the means but separates therefrom when the brake is actuated, and a wear indicator, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9 or claim 15 of the Specification of the main patent, secured to the part of the adjustment means nearer the brake member and having an extension projecting into the path of relative movement of the brake member and operating the indicator when the separation of the member from the means exceeds a predetermined amount of lost motion. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, a wear-adjusting means 15 for a drum brake comprises a first part 16 having a bifurcated end embracing the lefthand shoe 11 and being secured to that shoe by a spring 23 linking a lug 24 on part 16 with a hole 25 in the shoe; the first part 16 also has a threaded end 17 bearing a wheel 18. The wearadjusting means comprises a second part 19 having a plain socket-like end 20 into which the threaded end 17 of part 16 freely extends and whose rim is contacted by wheel 18; the other end of part 19 is bifurcated and embraces the right-hand shoe 11. A spring clip 27 has two pairs of resilient arms 28 embracing the second part 19, of which one pair fit into slots 32 in part 19 to prevent relative axial movement, and a further pair of preferably resilient arms 30 holds wheel 18 against end 20. Finally spring clip 27 has a pair of smaller resilient arms 29 which secure to it a wear-sensing means 26 which may be of the type described in relation to Fig. 5 of the Specification of the main patent. This wear-sensing means has a tension rod 61 on which a U-shaped abutment 62 straddling the bifurcated end of part 19 is adjustably located, the abutment co-operating with a lug 63 at the inner end of a right-hand slot 22. In operation, if the wear-adjusting means 15 fails to operate, or is not manually operated, so that the shoes 11 separate so far that lug 63 engages abutment 62, tension rod 61 is pulled, and the consequent separation of electrical contacts in the wear-sensing means 26 results in warning being given. Subsequent adjustment of the wear-adjusting means lengthens it so that abutment 62 is spaced from lug 63 again. The left-hand end of part 16 may be engaged directly by spring 23 instead of having a lug. Clip 27 can be axially located on adjuster 15 by a pin moulded on sensor 26 and protruding through a hole in the clip into the adjuster 15. The clip may be integrally moulded with the sensor, so arms 29 may be dispensed with. Arms 30 may carry a pressure ring abutting wheel 18 instead of abutting it directly. Abutment 62 may be only the bent-over end of tension rod 61. In Fig. 7, sensor 26 is secured to adjuster 15 by a screwed fastener 38, only one arm 30 being provided.
