Abstract
1415980 Preparation of acid chlorides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 17 Dec 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 58304/73 Heading C2C Acid chlorides are prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid withphosgene at an elevated temperature in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst of the general formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are independently selected from alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl and aralkyl radicals of 1 to 25 carbon atoms and an acid chloride medium; said acid chloride medium corresponding to the acid chloride produced. Examples of suitable carboxylic acids are the phthalic acids, benzaic acid, toluic, acid, trimesic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, lauric acid, stearic acid, azelaic acid, cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and cyclopentane dicarboxylic acid. The catalyst may be present in an amount of from about 0À1 to 2À0 mole per cent based on the moles of carboxylic acid. A preferred temperature range is from about 120‹ to 160‹ C.
