Abstract
1415839 Acoustic Doppler systems DETECTRONIC Ltd 14 Nov 1972 53333/71 Heading H4D The speed of a boat relative to water is measured by a CW acoustic Doppler system in which the extracted Doppler difference frequency is divided to give a first quotient frequency which is a predetermined function of the Doppler difference frequency per unit increment of boat speed, and the first quotient frequency is further divided by a constant divisor to give a signal for actuating a speed indicator. In the embodiment described the extracted Doppler frequency signal is converted to a train of pulses at the Doppler frequency and these are fed to a first frequency divider which is adjustable to give a predetermined output frequency change per unit speed change. This allows any offset of the acoustic beam direction from the boat travel direction to be taken into account. The divider output is applied via a second frequency divider, having a selectable division ratio, to a frequency-to-current converter driving a deflection-type speed indicator, and is applied via a fixed division ratio part of the second divider to a counter which logs distance travelled. The selectable ratio determines the range of speed indicated.
