Abstract

1415683 Transfer devices REED INTERNATIONAL Ltd 9 July 1973 [10 July 1972] 32148/72 Heading B8A A transfer device for transferring a hospital patient between a bed and a trolley and from the trolley to an operating table for example comprises a belt 1 which is wound on at either end to first and second reels 4, 5 respectively and passes over rollers 22, 8, 9, 23 to define an upper patient supporting portion 10 and a lower portion 11 for engaging with the bed or trolley or table, there being an auxiliary takeup and let-out device 6 comprising a belt 12 which is wound on a reel 14 and passes about a floating roller 15 to an anchorage 13, the roller 15 being connected to the roller 8. An electric motor 40 drives the reels 4, 5, 14 by way of respective clutches 42, 43, 44, the reels 4, 14 also having brakes (50, 60) associated therewith, Fig. 7. By disengaging the clutch 44 and engaging the electromagnetic brake 60 the reel 14 is held fixed and either of the reels 4, 5 can be driven through their associated clutch to take the belt up thereon while the belt is let out by the other reel to cause movement of the belt in the direction of either the arrows 17, 20 to cause the transfer device to track by movement of its ground engaging portion 11 to load a patient on to the portion 10 of the belt 1 while a patient may be unloaded from the device by driving the other of the reels 4, 5 to wind the belt 1 in the opposite direction. When a patient is resting on the portion 10 of the belt 1 the said portion 10 is held stationary relative to the transfer device during tracking thereof by locking the reel 4 by means of its clutch and brake 42, 50 and driving either of the reels 5, 14. In the former case the belt 12 is unwound off the reel 14 by movement of the connected reels 15, 8 to the right in Fig. 4 resulting in the position shown in Fig. 6 (not shown) with resultant movement of the transfer device in one direction. Conversely the reel 14 may be driven to wind the belt 12 back thereon thus causing movement of the reels 15, 8 to the left, back to their position shown in Fig. 4 with resultant movement of the transfer device in the other direction.
