Abstract

1415416 Electro-chemical analysis WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 28 Sept 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 45427/73 Heading G1N Sodium vapour pressure is monitored using a solid electrolyte exhibiting significant sodium ion conductivity. The electrolyte may be fabricated from glass, molten salts (NaCl, NaOH) impregnated in a disc, sodium beta-alumina (Na 2 O-11 Al 2 O 3 ) or sodium double beta alumina Na 2 O- 5Al 2 O 3 -MgO. The solid electrolyte disc 12 is mounted in a gaseous environment G which may be an inert gas surrounding sodium containing pipes of a sodium cooled fast breeder reactor, Fig. 3 (not shown). Porous electrodes 14, 16 of molybdenum, nickel or stainless steel are mounted on opposite surfaces of the electrolyte and suitably biased by battery V. When sodium atoms impinge on anode 14 they are converted into sodium ions which are conducted across the electrolyte to the cathode 16 generating a current which is monitored by ammeter A and which is a direct measure of sodium vapour pressure at a given voltage and temperature (maintained by heater 26). If the vapour pressure is sufficiently high the current saturates and under these conditions the device may operate in a yes/no manner. The device may be operated in a voltage mode whereby the electrodes are isolated from one another and a known sodium vapour pressure is established at one of the electrodes and the unknown at the other electrode. The resultant generated e.m.f. is measured by a voltmeter connected across the electrodes, Fig. 4 (not shown) and is indicative of the difference in vapour pressures. The device may be used to measure temperature by keeping the vapour pressures at a known value.
