Abstract

1415385 Dental restorative materials; polymerization initiator systems WALLACE A ERICKSON & CO 21 Feb 1973 [3 March 1972] 8594/73 Heading C3P A two-component system for use in preparing a dental restorative filling material comprises (a) a pastelike phase of a polymerizable mixture containing at least one polymerizable monomer (capable of being polymerized by an organic peroxide catalyst aromatic tertiary amine accelerator system), a finely divided filler material, and a said amine accelerator, and (b) a mixing sheet having at least on a surface thereof a said peroxide catalyst, the catalyst being available for incorporation into component (a) in sufficient quantity to catalyse polymerization of the polymerizable mixture when, in use of the system, component (a) is placed and spatulated on the surface of component (b). Component (b) alone constitutes a further embodiment of the invention. The preferred monomer is the 1 : 2 molar adduct of bisphenol A and glycidyl methacrylate, optionally diluted with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The filler may be fused or amorphous quartz, borosilicate or other glass. Benzoyl peroxide is the preferred catalyst and dimethyl paratoluidine the preferred activator. The mixing sheet may be a single sheet or a pad comprising a plurality of superposed sheets and may be formed from various paper materials, other cellulosic materials, or polyethylene or polyester film.
