Abstract

1414605 Alkylating isobutane with ethylene TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 23 Feb 1974 8320/74 Heading C5E Isobutane is alkylated with ethylene in the presence of a HCl-promoted AlCl 3 alkylation catalyst and the effluent is then subjected to a process comprising (a) fractionating the effluent into a recycle isobutane fraction, an alkylated hydrocarbon fraction, a C 1 -C 3 hydrocarbon fraction and a n-butane-ethyl chloride fraction (b) contacting the n-butane-ethyl chloride fraction in the vapour phase with a bauxite catalyst at 400-1000‹ F. at an ethylchloride CHSV of 0À1-5 to produce an effluent comprising n-butane, ethylene and HCl; (c) separating from the effluent from (b) a vapour stream comprising ethylene and HCl and recycling them as reactants to the alkylation reaction, which may be carried out in the liquid phase at 70-150‹ F., 45-400 p.s.i.a.' and with a molar ratio of isobutane : ethylene of 2 : 1 to 25 : 1.
