Abstract

1414564 Electrostatic dewatering of slurries ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 4 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 18501/73 Heading C1C [Also in Division C7] An apparatus for dewatering a slurry containing solid particles, consists of at least one upright hollow cathode (10, 11) with an apertured surface, anodes (13, 14, 15) on both sides of the or each cathode, a flexible membrane of electrically insulating material (16) with means for traversing the membrane upwardly and downwardly over the cathode (5) between the cathode and anodes, and means for feeding the slurry into the region between the anodes and the membrane and means (26) for removing the water from inside the cathode(s). Scrapers (25) remove sludge which deposits on the membrane. Sewage sludge or waterworks flocculating agents may be treated. The membrane may be nylon or polypropylene. The anodes may be of lead dioxide, platinum, platinized titanium or ruthenium dioxide; the cathodes may be of stainless steel, or nickel. When treating sewage containing 3% solids, cathode areas of 144 sq. cm. were used at 30 volts and a current density of 22 milliamps per geometric sq. cm. The final wet solid content was 28%.
