Abstract
1414098 Coated products G T SHUTT 15 Aug 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 38636/73 Heading B2E In a method for the preparation of a coated ferrous metal substrate, a polymerisable compound, a filler which is not anodic with respect to the substrate and an ionisable compound capable of dissolving in moisture to form a corrosive electrolytic solution are mixed and applied to a ferrous metal substrate and the polymerisable compound is polymerised such that the resultant polymer and filler together form a firm porous coating adhered to the ferrous metal substrate and containing the ionisable compound. Preferred polymerisable compounds are alkyl silicates, acrylic resins, urethane resins and styrene resins. Inert fillers are preferably silica, talc, mica, kaolin, bentonite, asbestos, fireclay, clay impurities, aluminium oxide or zirconium oxide. Active fillers specified are carbon, ferric oxide, copper, copper oxide, cadmium, cadmium oxide, tin, tin oxide, titanium oxide and chromium oxide. Suitable ionisable compounds are inorganic and organic salts of many metals and organic bases e.g. calcium hydrogen phosphate and guanidine chromate. Examples describe the preferred coatings in which silicate esters are used together with metal oxides or salts.
