Abstract

1413796 Machinery safety devices HOTPOINT Ltd 20 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 60619/71 Heading F2J [Also in Divisions F4 and Hl] A switching mechanism including a member 2 manually rotatable from an "OFF" position to one or more angular positions to cause operation of switches 7 for energizing an electric motor arranged to drive a rotatable drum of, for example, a tumbler dryer, the member 2 being arranged to govern directly or indirectly (i.e. by timing mechanism or by temperatureresponsive means) the duration of energization of said motor, has spring means 14 which is arranged to apply torque to the member 2 to return it quickly to the "OFF" position but is normally restrained by latch 15, 16 which is released when a door giving access to the drum is opened. As shown, rotation of knob 5 winds a clockwork timer motor 4 and, by pin 13 engaging a lug 12, turns a disc 10 and winds a spiral return spring 14. The disc 10 has steps 11 around its periphery and latch tongue 16 engages a selected step to restrain spring 14 while motor 4 is allowed to drive spindle 2 slowly back to its original "OFF" position-by virtue of the lost motion between pin 13 and lug 12. However, should the drum door be opened the Bowden cable 19 ensures release of latch tongue 16 from the step 11 and spring 14 overrides motor 4 and rapidly restores spindle 2 and switches 7 to "OFF". In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the timer motor and lost-motion coupling are omitted, disc 10 is replaced by a disc (68) having progressively deeper steps, and the latch tongue (72) is controlled by a bellows (75) connected by capillary (74) to a temperature sensing phial (73); thus the device is restored to the "OFF" position at a temperature predetermined by the step selected, or immediately if the drum door is opened since the latch (72) is then moved by the Bowden cable (79) an amount greater than the largest step. Another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) combines both time and temperature controls by using a disc (36) to determine the temperature at which the motor (24) commences a time drive to the spindle (22) and a lost-motion disc (30) to restrain the rapid return safety spring (34). A heating element may be controlled by one of the switches of the device which then provides the extra safety feature of preventing inadvertent energization of the heater by closure of the door, since the device must be reset before operation of the dryer is resumed.
