Abstract
1413203 Puffing cereal grains GENERAL MILLS INC 23 Jan 1973 3449/73 Heading A2Q Food material, e.g. cereal grains, in continuously puffed by (a) heating a granular heattransfer material, e.g. salt, in a heating chamber, (b) continuously transferring the heattransfer material from the heating chamber to a puffing chamber, (c) continuously introducing the food material to the puffing chamber independently of the heat-transfer material, (d) mixing the two materials in the puffing chamber and (e) continuously discharging the mixture. In a suitable apparatus, the heating chamber comprises an inclined tube 12, Fig. 1 surrounded by heating element 62-Fig. 4 and insulation 68. The heat-transfer material enters at the lower end 34 and is moved along the tube by auger 48. The puffing chamber 18- Fig. 1 receives heat-transfer material via chute 38-Fig. 6 and food material via chute 28. The chamber rotates and the two materials are mixed and moved through by helical baffle 90. The mixture is discharged from the puffing chamber on to vibratory conveyor 24, and separated into its two components and the heat-transfer material is recycled.
