Abstract
1413201 Coated plastics films FUJI PHOTO FILM CO LTD 5 Jan 1973 [12 Jan 1972] 844/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division B6] A plastics film for receiving electrophotographic toner images has a thermal resistance of 100‹C or more, and is coated on one side or both with a layer of (a) a film-forming polymer which contains a copolymer of at least 10% by weight of styrene with up to 90% by weight of an acrylic or methacrylic ester, and (b) 0.1 to 10%, by weight of copolymer, of one or more matting agents. Preferred esters are C 1-5 alkyl esters. The matting agent may be SiO 2 , starch, alumina, or plastics powder, e g. polyethylene, polyester or polyacrylonitrile. An addition polymer may be present in an amount of 5 to 95% by wt. of total polymer and may comprise nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, or other esters such as mixed terephthalic esters, polycarbonates, polysulphones, polyvinylidene chloride, or polyphenylene oxides. By mixed terephthalic ester is meant the polycondensation product formed from mixtures of acids containing terephthalic acid and at least one further dicarboxylic acid, e.g. isophthalic, ortho-phthalic, adipic with bifunctional alcohols having up to 10 carbon atoms per molecule e.g. glycols. The coating is applied to the film from solution and may contain a swelling agent (several specified) or pigment such as 1, 4-substituted anthraquinones, azo dyes, triphenylmethane dyes, quinoline dyes, or carbon black, titania, white. lead or red oxide. The film may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polysulphone, polyphenylene oxide, polyamide, polycarbonate, a cellulose ester or polyamide. Where the copolymer/matting agent coating is only on one side, the other side may be coated with an antistatic layer less than 1.0Á thick formed from a solution of 0.01 to 2.0% antistatic agent such as: naphthalene sulphonates, ethylene oxide addition products, phosphoric esters; anionic surfactants such as alkyl metal sulphates, aryl metal sulphates, alkyl naphthalene metal sulphates and alkyl metal sulphonates, the alkyl or aryl group having 10 to 20 C atoms, and the metal being Na, K, Mg or Ca; cationic surfactants such as C 10-20 alkyl amine salts, C 10-20 alkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride; or non-ionic surfactants such as polyoxyethylene C 10-20 alkyl phenols, polyoxyethylene polyalcohols, the alcohol being a C 10-20 aliphatic alcohol. The surfactant layer may include a binder consisting of a resin selected from the above mentioned additional resins.
