Abstract
1413157 Unsaturated polyester moulding compositions DART INDUSTRIES Inc 6 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 56254/72 Heading C3P A composition comprises (a) an unsaturated, thermosettable polyester having a melting point above 65‹ C., (b) a polymerizable crosslinking agent having the structure wherein R<SP>1</SP> independently is H or CH 3 and R<SP>2</SP> independently is H, C 1-4 alkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with halogen, OH, NO or C 1-4 alkyl; C 4-6 cycloalkyl or a group of formula wherein each R<SP>11</SP> independently is H or CH 3 and R<SP>12</SP> is a straight or branched chain C 1-8 alkylene group; (an example of such a compound is methylene bis acrylamide; each R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> = H) or wherein n = 2 to 10, R<SP>1</SP> is H or CH 3 and Z is a polyvalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic group, the aliphatic group being of the formula wherein each R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> independently is H or C 1-4 alkyl; the cycloaliphatic group preferably is cyclohexylene or bis-methylene cyclohexane and the aromatic group preferably is phenylene or phenylene substituted with up to 4 CH 3 groups, on bis methylene benzene or bis-methylene benzene substituted with up to 4 CH 3 groups (an example of such a compound is ethylene glycol bis-acrylate; Z represents -CH 2 CH 2 - each R represents a hydrogen atom and n is 2); or a condensation product of hydroxymethyl diacetone acrylamide having a molecular weight of 400-3000. (c) a freeradical initiator having a 10 hour ¢ life period above 93‹ C. and (d) a filler material and/or fibrous reinforcing agent. The composition is a free-flowing solid at room temperature. The typical α,#-ethylenic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid type materials which form part of (a) may be modified by inclusion of monobasic acids and/or monohydric alcohols as well as saturated dicarboxylic and aromatic acids. Typical peroxy compounds are given as examples of component (c) and glass, asbestos and graphite fibres for examples of (d).
