Abstract

1412456 Ion exchange membranes YEDA RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 21 Dee 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 59223/72 Heading B5B Ion-exchange membranes of chloro-sulphonated polyolefins are prepared by (a) conditioning a polyolefin sheet, tube or powder with a halogenated swelling agent at a temperature below which the swelling agent dissolves the film to eliminate orientation and crystallinity in the polymer; (b) sulphochlorinating the swollen polyolefin; (c) in the case of polyolefin powder, casting or extruding a chlorinated aromatic solvent dope of the powder to form a membrane; and (d) hydrolysing or aminating the sulphochlorinated membrane to convert it into a cation- or anion-specific permselective membrane. The conditioning step (a) is preferably carried out using CCl 4 . Sulphochlorination step (b) is preferably effected at a temperature below 30‹ C. using a. mixture chlorine and sulphur dioxide gases until a sulphur content of 7-17 wt. per cent is attained. The preferred membrane casting solvent (step (c)) are chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene and chlorinated naphthalene. In examples membranes having ion exchange capacities of 0À4-0À5 meq./g. are prepared either by sulphochlorinated of performed tubular or sheet polyethylene membranes or by sulphochlorination of ethylene or propylene powders followed by membrane casting or extrusion from these powders. The membranes were either hydrolysed with aqueous NaOH or aminated with N,N-dimethylpropanediamine.
