Abstract
1412146 Thrust-producing mechanisms D O ENIOJUKAN 20 Sept 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 44189/72 Heading F2X A thrust-producing mechanism comprises means for causing a mass to move continuously round an endless path which, along a major part of its length, is curved about a centre of curvature which is located outside the endless path, and a rotatable drive means for propelling the mobile mass round the endless path. In one embodiment, a casing block is formed of two dished halves 1 held together by edge flanges 3 to form between them a shallow cylindrical chamber. Grooves are formed in the opposing faces of the block halves 1, each groove comprising an upper curved portion 6 and a lower curved portion 7 joined at their ends by loop portions 8. The centre of curvature of each groove portion 6, 7 lies outside the endless channel formed by the groove portions 6, 7, 8. Rollers 9 are located in the endless channel, being paired by shafts 10 between opposite rollers in the two block halves 1. Each block half 1 has a centrally bored outer hub and on a shaft 11 extending through, and rotatable in, bearings in the hubs is fixed a disc 13 located in the shallow chamber within the casing block. The disc 13 is formed with a plurality of radial slots 14 through each of which passes the shaft 10 of a pair of rollers. The disc 13 is rotated by an external power source applied to the shaft 11, and the rollers 9 thus caused to move around the shaft 11. During the parts of their motion following groove portions 6, 7, centrifugal forces are directed radially from the centres of curvature of these portions 6, 7, and these force combine to a resultant force, applied by the rollers 9 to the casing block in a direction defined by a line joining the centres of curvature of the portions 6, 7 and the axis of the shaft 11.
