Abstract

1411645 Marine seismic exploration TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 Nov 1973 55455/73 Heading H4D A marine survey is made by towing a seismic detector streamer such that the detectors pass in succession through a predetermined surface point, actuating a seismic source at a single fixed location each time a detector passes through the point, deriving from each detector a respective signal representing the seismic energy arriving at the point, and stacking the signals. In the embodiment described, for refraction surveying, the source comprises four air guns carried by an anchored vessel and fired together. The streamer has, e.g. 24 detectors (each including a geophone array) and is towed by a second vessel. One of the vessels carries a radio navigation system to identify its position; the relative position of the other vessel being identified by computing the water-break arrival times at selected locations along the streamer or by a second radio system. A command signal for remotely actuating the source is generated on board the towing vessel at intervals equal to the time taken for the streamer to advance by one detector length. A signal notifying the actuation instant is sent from the first to the second (towing) vessel. Detector signals associated with common surfaces points are stacked.
