1411356 Refuse compactor HOBART CORP 26 Sept 1972 [21 July 1972] 36643/74 Divided out of 1411289 Heading B8C A compactor, e.g. for domestic refuse, comprising a housing 10 having a top 14, sides 16, 17 extending between the top 14 and a base 12, a receptacle 40 movable between a compacting position within the housing and a non-compacting position displaced therefrom, a ram 18 mounted in the housing in opposition to the receptacle when the latter is in its compacting position, and drive means 20, 24, 32, 36, 38, for moving the ram 18 into and out of the receptacle in compacting and retracting strokes, is characterized in that a filtering system 60 is disposed within the housing for reducing odours emanating from material placed in the receptacle. As shown, the ram 18 is vertically reciprocal within the housing 10 by one, or more, screw-jacks 38 and nuts 36 rotatable by a motor 20 through a belt-and-pulley mechanism 22, 24, and a chain- and-sprocket mechanism 34, 36. The compactor 10 includes a drawer 40 which is mounted on slides 42 for sliding movement between a compacting position beneath the ram 18 and a non-compacting position displaced outwardly of the housing, and preferably a hinged door 44. The housing 10 also preferably includes a safety interlock system, Fig. 4 not shown, to prevent actuation of the ram 18 when the drawer 40 is not centred beneath the ram. Means for circulating deodourized air within the housing 10 comprises a flat duct 50 which is located between the drawer 40 in its compacting position and the housing side wall 16 and has an intake 52 adjacent the open top of the drawer 40 and in which is mounted a circulation fan 58 driven by a two-speed motor 58. A duct outlet 54, positioned adjacent the bottom of the housing 10, has a filter 60 of odour-absorbing, or adsorbing, activated charcoal mounted therein by clips 62, 64, In a circuit, Fig. 5, not shown, the fan 56 operates for a time after each compacting operation in addition to the manual operation provided by the simpler circuit, Fig. 4, not shown. In another circuit, Fig. 6, not shown, for controlling the fan the latter is automatically operated at a higher speed for a predetermined time after each opening of the drawer.
