Abstract

141,127. Trobridge, E. G. Jan. 6, 1919. Plants, supporting and training.-A device for holding and supporting growing plants &c. comprises a number of hooks, bights, or loops detachably and pivotally connected to a perforated support of stiff but bendable material by means of press-button or like snap or spring fasteners. The hooks may be turned upwardly or downwardly, and they may be bent laterally and extended slightly behind the support. Their inner faces may be corrugated, nodulated, or roughened to break up the sun's rays. Fig. 4 shows a wire support flattened at intervals and provided with circular holes and keyhole or doublekeyhole slots to receive the ends of hooks 3. Fig. 6 shows a support made by folding a strip of metal, celluloid, &c. on itself and then slitting it and bulging it out at intervals. Fig. 8<a> shows a support made by twisting wires 3<1>, 4<1> together. Another support consists of a plain strip having circular holes to receive the hooks and other holes to facilitate fastening the support on any object. Fig. 10 shows several forms of holes and slits which may be employed in the supports. Two circular holes may be connected by a slit. The hooks, bights, or loops may be made of metal, leather, cloth, &c., or metal and cloth. They may be formed from wire or sheet-metal, celluloid, or other blanks. Their edges may be bent back to prevent injury to the plants. Fig. 11 shows a blank levelled off at one end 17 and formed into a globular or tapered cylindrical shape 22 at the other. The part 22 may be slit so that it may yield when pressed into the hole in the support; or it may be like the male member of a pressbutton fastener. The part 22 may be pressed through a hole 26 or slit 27 in the other end before being connected to the support. Fig. 13 shows an adjustable loop 29<1> provided with a slit at one end and two slits 31, 32 at the other. It is secured by a separate press-button fastener. In a modification, the loop hangs from the fastener at 8<1>, Fig. 8<a>. Fig. 15 shows a separate spring fastener made of wire. It has a conical point 35, outwardly curved parts 36, and end parts 37, 38 bent as shown. It may have a cover-piece 39. Fig. 17 shows a solid fastener comprising a circular, oval, or polygonal body 40 having a circular, rectangular, or other shaped head 41 and a conical point 42.
