Abstract
141,098. Lord, G. S. Dec. 5, 1918. Hank type.-Relates to apparatus for sizing, mercerizing, dyeing, and similarly treating hanks of yarn with liquids, and consists of an apparatus in which the hanks are mounted on rollers supported on carriages connected together and travelling on an endless vertical track, the arrangement being such that, when a carriage reaches the doffing position, the travel of all the carriages is arrested, while the hanks or other carriages are caused to run over their rollers until the travel of the carriages is again permitted, when the running ceases. Two endless tracks a are mounted side by side, each consisting of top and bottom I-beams a<1> connected by end members a<2>, a<5>, the member a<2> having an outwardly-extending flange a<3>, and the member a<5> an outwardly-extending flange a<6> and inwardly-extending flanges a<7>, a<8> forming continuations of flanges a<4>, a<9> on the beams a<1>. Carriages d run on rails on the tracks and are connected by links e. Each carriage has a rotatable shaft f, carrying a roller h and a sprocket-wheel g engaging with a continuously-driven endless chain p, and a fixed shaft j carrying a lever k, one end of which has a roller m and the other a bowl n running in the track formed by the flanges a<4>, a<9>, a<7>, a<8>. Troughs s contain mercerizing or like liquor, on which the hanks v, mounted on the rollers h, m, are treated on the lower rim, while on the upper rim the hanks come under sprinklers t for washing-water, which is collected in tanks u. In operation, the chain tends to rotate the wheels g, but owing to the resistance due to the stretch of the hanks being greater than the torque on the wheels, these do not rotate, but carry the carriages round bodily. When a carriage approaches the doffing position at the right-hand end, its leading wheel falls, bringing the roller m below the centre. As this continues, the pull of the hank turns the lever k right over when its bowl is free, relieving the tension on the hank to allow it to be replaced, and bringing the bowl n into contact with an inclined surface o<1> on an abutment o. Simultaneously, a stop w engages a cross-bar x on the carriage in advance to arrest all the carriages, whereupon the wheels g of the carriages in the upper and lower runs are rotated by the chain to run the hanks on their rollers, that in the lower run being turned in the tanks s, and those in the upper run under the sprinklers t. When ther hank in the doffing position has been replaced, the stop w is removed, whereupon the turning of the wheels g ceases and the carriages re-start. The bowl n then runs down the incline o<1> until the other end of the lever k contacts with a stop o<2>, which swings the lever on until the bowl k enters between the flanges a', a<9>, thereby stretching the new hank between the rollers h, m. The lever stop w may be engaged automatically and released manually, or engaged and released manually. The chain p may be led over suitable guide-wheels to engage the carriage at the lefthand end of the frames, where also squeezing- rollers may be provided to remove excess liquid from the hanks. The shafts may be mounted in slotted bearings z to adapt the carriages for hanks of varying lengths, and may be adjusted by screws 2 mounted in the cross-bars x. Under tracks 7 may be prcvided to prevent the carriages from sagging in the lower run. A doffing position may be provided at each end.
