Abstract

1410768 Anodizing aluminium VICKERS Ltd 17 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 49296/71 Heading C7B [Also in Division G2] A base sheet of Al or Al alloy for producing a lithographic printing plate is produced by cleaning e.g. degreasing the sheet, optionally graining (e.g. chemically, mechanically using steatite marbles in a slurry of alumina abrasive or electro-chemically using AC in HCl) and washing, anodizing using an electrolyte comprising H 2 SO 4 with or without H 3 PO 4 to form thereon a porous anodic oxide layer, treating the layer with aqueous H 3 PO 4 solution to whiten the greyish anodic oxide, then washing and drying or sealing by applying thereto an organic colloid e.g. dichromated gum arabic. The treated base sheet may then be coated with a light sensitive material, e.g. comprising quinone diazide or polyvinyl cinnamate, or dichromated poly (vinyl alcohol), which is image-wise exposed and developed to remove the non-light struck areas and reveal the underlying base sheet, prior to etching and applying thereto ink-receptive lacquer and removing the light struck areas of the coating. The ink-receptive lacquer may be a solution of vinylchloride/vinyl acetate copolymer in diisobutyl ketone. A positive working light sensitive coating solution specified contains 2, 4-dihydroxybenzophenone -bis (naphthoquinone -(1,2)-diazide- (2) -5-sulphonate) and cresol novolak resin in 2-ethoxyethanol, and poly (vinyl hydrogen phthalate).
