Abstract

1410710 Mechanical switches INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 17 Jan 1973 [18 Jan 1972] 2352/73 Heading H1N [Also in Division B3] A copying device for a milling machine comprises a template 4 fixed relative to the workpiece 1, and a sensor 5 arranged via a two part electrical circuit A, B, Fig. 3, to cause the movement of the tool head in the X, Y, directions to cut a profile 2, so that when the sensor is in engagement with the template the tool head is moved in one of the directions under the control of one part of the electrical circuit, and when they are not in engagement, the movement of the tool head in the other direction comes under the sole, or additional, control of the other part. Sensor 5, Fig. 2, comprises a disc-shaped stylus 6 carried on a spindle 7 mounted in a housing 8 by a spherical bearing 9. A spring- urged-plate 12 is located on the spindle by a ball 11 and the plate forms the moving contact of a switch, whose fixed contacts are formed by adjustable screws 18, 19. In operation, stylus 6, Fig. 4 is required to move from point P to point P1. Stylus 6 is pressed against the template on the Y axis so that spindle 7 oscillates around bearing 9 and plate 12 touches screw 18 and closes circuit A, Fig. 3. An electro-clutch 22 is energized and the tool head is moved a distance L1X along the X axis. At the end of this distance the stylus is not in contact with the template, spindle 7 oscillates and plate 12 moves into contact with screw 19, and the part B of the circuit is closed. A second clutch 23 is energized and the tool head 3 is moved a distance L1Y along the Y axis. This stepping operation is carried out until the stylus reaches point P1. In a modification, at the beginning of the operation part A of the circuit is short circuited, so that clutch 22 allows head 3 to move continuously along distance L1X, whereupon plate 12 contacts screw 19 which closes circuit B and actuates clutch 23. However unlike the first sequence at this stage, circuit A does not open since it is short circuited. The stylus moves along line (L2), Fig. 5 (not shown), resulting from simultaneous feeds L2X and L2Y. This sequence continues until the stylus reaches point (Q) whereupon part B of the circuit is short-circuited and part A is re-established. The sequence continues up to point P1. Capacitors or diodes 24, 25, and indicator lamps 26, 27, are placed in circuits A. B.
