Abstract
141,049. Westinghouse Lamp Co., (Assignees of Madden, H. de F., and Higgins, J. J.). April 3, 1919, [Convention date]. Forming electric-lamp bulbs.-Lamps are exhausted, and, if desired, filled with inert gas, through the annular space between the stem and the bulb neck during the sealing of these parts. In the machine shown, the stem 65 is supported by a tube 5, slidably mounted in a tube 8 and bearing 3; its height may be adjusted by a bellcrank lever 17 engaging a collar 21 on the tube 5 and controlled by a cam 25. The bulb neck 61 is closed by a rubber gasket 39 protected by an asbestos collar, and its flared end is gripped by spring-pressed jaws 36 on the tube 8; the latter is slidably mounted in a tube 10 carrying a gear-box 31, and can be rotated by a keyed wheel driven by a wheel 43. The neck may be raised or lowered by a bell-crank lever 18 engaging a collar 15 on the tube 8 and controlled by a cam 28. The bulb is supported by a frame 51 mounted in a gear-box 46, and rotated bv a shaft 50<a> driven by the wheel 43. The gear-box 46 and the levers 17, 18 are mounted on rods 46 and the levers 17, 18 are mounted on rods 45 secured to the gearbox 31. The lamp and stem may be raised as a whole by a lever 29, which moves the tube 10 in a sleeve 2 secured to the main frame. The leading-in wires are secured bv pivoted jaws 34, 33, the latter of which has a slot 33a engaging a pin 4<a> on a rod 4, pressed upwards by a spring 56. A key 22 on the rod causes it and the tubes 5, 8 to rotate together. The interior of the bearing 3 may bo connected by a cock 60 to either a vacuum pipe 58 or a pipe 57 connected to an inert gas supply, and is connected to the lamp by a passage in the side of the rod 4. Rings of burners 52, 55 surround the neck and the bulb respectively, and a slotted cover 54 rests on the ring 52. The neck of the lamp is first drawn down so as to leave only a narrow space between it and the stem, the exhaustion and filling is then carried out, and repeated if necessary, and the lamp finally sealed. The lamp may be moved up and down to heat a large area at first. In a vacuum lamp, sealing is carried out at as low a temperature as possible.
