Abstract

1409487 Indicating apparatus ELLIOTT BROS (LONDON) Ltd 15 March 1974 [29 March 1973] 15120/73 Heading G1J An automatic map reader for use in an aircraft comprises a displaying arrangement having a pair of line elements 15a, 15b which are rotatable about a common axis OZ, the elements being rotatably driven in such a manner that the point of intersection 19 of the lines indicates the position on a map 13 of the aircraft. Stepping motors or D.C. motors may be employed to drive the line elements 15a, 15b by way of gearing, the motors receiving inputs in accordance with navigation data fed automatically (e.g. by computer) to the control circuits of the motors. The line elements 15a, 15b may be provided on transparent discs which are rotatably mounted in one part of a housing which is hinged to another part of the housing, the parts being arranged, in use, to sandwich a map (or a part thereof) with which the reader is to be used. Manually operative buttons 67, 69, 71 are provided for setting purposes before the reader becomes automatically operative. The transparent discs may each be provided with a line in the shape of an archimedian spiral Fig. 5 (not shown), or one of the discs may be provided with such a line while the other is provided with a straight line, as shown.
