Abstract
1409111 Granulating machines CARBORUNDUM CO 7 June 1972 [15 June 1971 (3)] 26430/72 Heading B5A Apparatus for rapidly cooling and solidifying an oxide refractory melt comprises a solidification chamber containing cooling media or metallic spheres and means for casting the oxide refractory melt into the solidification chamber over the cooling media, whereby in use of the apparatus the oxide refractory melt is rapidly cooled and solidified. Preferably the solidification chamber is filled to a depth of at least 15 cm. and the cooling media may be steel spheres ranging from 5-60 mm. diameter. The apparatus may also comprise a magnet for recovering the cooling media from the solidified melt. Means for rotating the solidfication chamber may be present and the solidification chamber may be a closed bottom moulding pan. A plurality of moulding panels may be provided and the apparatus may include means for moving the pans to the means for casting the melt of oxide thereinto or means for moving the casting means to the moulding pans. Means may also be present for adding additional cooling media while the oxide refractory melt is being cast into the solidification chamber. The means for casting the oxide refractory material may be provided with a plurality of inlets into the solidification chamber. The solidification chamber may have at its lower end an opening through which the cooling media and solidified oxide refractory melt can be removed. The solidification chamber may have an outer wall in the form of a hollow cylinder having a lower open end, the hollow cylindrical outer wall being inclined at an angle whereby to control a continuous discharge of cooling media and solidified oxide refractory melt in the lower open end or it may comprise a substantially vertical outer wall in the form of a hollow cylinder of substantially horizontal detachable base capable of closing the opening in the lower end. The detachable base may have a substantially conical shape sloping downward from the centre of the base. The apparatus may contain means for rotating the detachable base relative to the vertical cylindrical outer wall, the detachable base being provided with ribs for rearranging the cooling media and solified oxide refractory melt on rotation of the base. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,323,282.
