Abstract

1409077 Seaming non-metallic sheet material WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 1 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 55655/72 Heading B5K Apparatus for producing transverse welds in a continuously-fed two-ply plastics film web 2 comprising a rotary welding cylinder 1 about which the web 2 is partially slung and which is provided with welding bars 10 at its periphery, is characterized in that (a) the bars 10 are stepless adjustable radially of the cylinder 1, .(b) the spacing between adjacent bars 10 when the latter are in their fully radially retracted position is equal to half the smallest desired spacing between adjacent welds, (c) steplessly radially adjustable supporting members 16 are provided between the bars 10, and (d) the bars 10 are energizable by a sequence control in a sequence which is independent of the number of bars 10. As shown, an endless belt 4 presses the web 2 on to the cylinder 1 and passes around rollers 3, 5, 6, the roller 6 being a tensioning roll. The cylinder 1 comprises two brackets 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and are radially displaceable by means 11, 11<SP>1</SP> comprising bar-holding means 12, 12<SP>1</SP> guided radially on a bevel gear 14, 14<SP>1</SP> by a helical screw 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. Five members 16, mounted between adjacent bars 10, are connected similarly to the gears 14, 14<SP>1</SP>. A sleeve 17 is rotatable about the shaft 8 and connects the gears 14, 14<SP>1</SP> with which engage pinions 20 having sockets 21 to receive an adjusting key. Simultaneous radial adjustment of the bars 10 and the members 16 is effected by rotation of one pinion 20. If radial adjustment is desired during operation, the screws 13, 13<SP>1</SP> could be adjusted by a servo motor, the hub of one gear 14, 14<SP>1</SP> being provided with spur gear teeth and the bevel gearing and the pinions 20 omitted. Each bar 10 comprises a movable member 23 mounted by pins 24 in a frame 22. Crank arms 25, 26 are pivoted to the pins 24 and are hinged to a welding beam 27. An air cylinder 30, controlled by a valve 32, acts on a rod 29, between the arms 25, 26, to move the beam 27 radially into and out of the welding position. Two heating elements 36 on each beam 27 are selectively operable to provide a single weld or two juxtaposed welds and are covered with a polytetrafluoroethylene sheet 37 passed about winding and tensioning rollers 38. To alter the spacing between adjacent welds, appropriate bars 10 are made inoperative through electrical switching operations controlled by a programme. A cam disc 39 rotating with the shaft 8 consecutively operates five micro-switches 40 during a complete cylinder revolution so that the sequence control device is notified of the cylinder position at any time.
