Abstract
1408777 Casting a strip-folding guide E COHEN 30 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49990/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division Dl] A guiding device for folding a strip of flexible material, e.g. a strip of fabric to be folded upon itself as it is fed to a sewing machine needle, is made by casting a body around a core placed in a mould, the core being formed by folding a length of sheet material so that it is flat at one end and folded together at the other, and then subsequently removing the core from the cast body to leave a guide passage of the desired shape. More than one passage may be provided by using a plurality of cores. The body is preferably cast from a transparent synthetic resin, e.g. an epoxy resin, thus enabling the position of the cores to be checked during casting. The core(s) may be, e.g. of wax, which is melted out by the heat of exothermic reaction of the resin during setting; or of lead, removed by a chemical agent; or of starched fabric, removed by tearing it out. The cast body may be made in sections to facilitate cleaning of the guide passages and complex arrangements of guide passages may be built up. Metal edges may be fitted at the entrances of the passages to prevent wear, and magnets may be cast into the bodies to locate them in use.
