Abstract

1408458 Breaking the surface of grain PAULS & SANDARS Ltd 7 March 1974 [7 Dec 1972] 56461/72 Heading A2Q A method of penetrating the pericarp/testa of grain, particularly barley, comprises causing each grain in a stream of grains to impinge once only on an abrasive surface. In one embodiment a falling curtain of grain is allowed to fall from chute 1 on to revolving cylinder 7. The release of the grain is controlled by sliding gate 3 or, in an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4), by a ribbed roller. The abrasive surface of the cylinder may comprise a blend of silica grits of differing fineness bonded with a heat-cured epoxy-resin.
