Abstract

1408004 Sail reefrin C J LAWRENCE 6 Nov 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 50994/72 Heading B7V Roller reefing gear for a sail craft includes a shaft 20 which in use extends fore and aft through a hollow metal mast A and is rotatable in bushings 11, the shaft being keyed or welded to a sleeve 6 rotatable bearings 1, 2 in a housing 5 under the control of a unidirectional clutch 3, the housing being mounted in a clamp 4 inside the mast A which is selectively operable to hold the housing fast or permit it to rotate, and the shaft 20 being coupled by a Hooke's type universal joint 30 to a boom B on which a sail may be reefed. The clamp 4 surrounds the housing 5 and is in two parts at one side by links 8 and pins 7 and at the other side by a bolt 10 the head of which is accessible externally of the mast A for actuation of the clamp. The shaft 20 may be rotated by a handle (not shown) engaging with the end of the shaft remote from the universal joint 30. The unidirectional clutch 3 is preferably of the kind having a plurality of spring loaded sprags operating between two coaxial cylindrical surfaces, and is disposed so as to allow reefing of the sail only when the clamp 4 holds the housing 5 against rotation.
