Abstract

1407898 Photopolymerizable compositions SUN CHEMICAL CORP 28 Aug 1973 [11 Sept 1972 (2)] 40545/73 Headings C3B C3P and C3R A photopolymerizable, solvent.free, composition comprises a vehicle curable by exposure to light, comprising the reaction product of (A) a fatty acid ester oil-modified epoxy resin or a fatty alkyl ester-modified epoxide resin, with (B) an ethylenically unsaturated acid. The composition may comprise (a) an ester having the general formula in which R is a residue of (meth)acrylic or ethacrylic acid or a half ester of itaconic, maleic, fumaric, sorbic acid or ›-phenylacrylic α- cyanoacrylic or cinnamic acid; R<SP>1</SP> is -OH, -NHCOK<SP>11</SP>, -OCOR<SP>11</SP> or OR<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> being an alkyl or aryl radical; X is a residue of an alkyl ester of a fatty acid or fatty acid oil; n is 0À2 to 50; and (2) a photoinitiator, the ratio of (1) : (2) being 99 : 1 to 10 : 90. A colourant may additionally be present. The composition may also contain a monomeric (meth)acrylate, itaconate, cinnamate or sorbate in a ratio by wt. to the ester of 10 : 90 to 90 : 10. The ester which contains OH groups may be end-capped, e.g. with an organic isocyanate or anhydride. Examples relate to epoxy resins first modified by linseed oil or methyl linoleate and subsequently reacted with acrylic acid. The products are useful in printing inks, adhesives and other coatings. After coating, e.g. on steel, aluminium, clay-coated box-board and surfacetreated polyethylene film, the coatings may be cured by exposure to ultra-violet light.
