Abstract
1407849 Unsaturated polyester compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 15 Dec 1972 [18 Dec 1971] 57925/72 Heading C3P An unsaturated polyester moulding composition comprises (1) an unsaturated polyester, (2) a vinyl or vinylidene monomer which is copolymerizable with (1), (3) 1 to 25% by weight, relative to the sum of the components (1) and (2), of a vinyl acetate homopolymer and/or a copolymer containing at least 90% by weight of vinyl acetate units, this polymer being soluble in the mixture of (1) and (2), and (4) an activator which becomes active at a temperature which is above 80‹ C., the unsaturated polyester (1) being a condensation product of (A) one or more dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides, at least 50 mol per cent of the acid component (A) being one or more α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides, and (B) a mixture of a branched diol and an unbranched diol, one of these two diols containing one or more ether groups and having a molecular weight of 100 to 170 whilst the other diol is free from ether groups and has a molecular weight of 60 to 100, and the branched diol being present in the diol mixture in an amount of 40 to 70 mol per cent if it is the diol containing one or more ether groups but being present in the diol mixture in an amount of 55 to 95 mol per cent if it is the diol free from ether groups. In the examples the compositions comprise: unsaturated polyesters prepared from fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride, 1,2-propanediol, di-1,2-propane-diol, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, hydroquinone, styrene, polyvinyl acetate, quartz powder and dibenzoyl peroxide paste.
