Abstract

1407630 Wells &c HEAVY OIL PRODUCERS SERVICES INC 30 June 1973 31271/73 Heading E1F A tool for use in an oil well having a casing (14), Fig I (not shown), a production tubing (12), a reciprocable plunger-type pump (18) in the lower portion of the production tubing, a packer (98) between the tubing and casing above the pump, and a pump rod string 16 reciprocable in the tubing for operating the pump, comprises a tubing assembly 20, 34, 40 and 24 for incorporation into the production tubing and including a pump rod pack-off sub 52, threaded means 66 releasably securing the sub 52 to the tubing assembly, and retrieving means 70 for incorporation into the pump rod string 16 and including threaded means 68 for engaging the sub 52, releasing the sub from the tubing assembly and removing the sub from the tubing assembly and production tubing without pulling to the production tubing from the casing. The lower end of the sub 52 is provided with a right-hand internal thread, and a left-hand external thread 66 which provides the releasable attachment of the sub with the tubing assembly. To remove the packing sub 52. pump rod 16 and pump plunger, the. pump rod is risen and rotated until the threaded portion 68 of the retrieving means 70 is fully received within the lower end of the sub, and further rotation causes the left-hand threaded portions 66 between the sub 52 and tubing assembly to dis-engage, thereafter the sub 52, rod 16 and pump plunger can be withdrawn. The tubing assembly includes a pack-off 46. Adjacent the. lower end of the tool is provided a production sub 84 with check valves 88, 96, the sub 84 providing communication between the production tubing and the surrounding annulus (92) defined by the casing (14). A quantity of lightweight fluid is disposed in the production tubing (12) above the sub 52 for lubricating the pump rod during reciprocation A sub 100 having a pressure-operated valve 108 is provided for removal of the fluid from the production tubing if necessary.
