Abstract

1407120 Alkali metal amides CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Feb 1974 [19 Feb 1973] 7990/73 Heading C1A Alkali metal amides are produced by reacting alkali metal and liquid ammonia in the presence of alkali metal azide as catalyst under superatmospheric pressure. From 1 to 35% by weight of catalyst may be used based on the ammonia weight. In Examples 1 and 2, sodium is reacted with liquid ammonia at 30‹ C. and 300 p.s.i.g. using sodium azide with or without reduced iron powder. Comparative examples are given using reduced iron powder alone or no catalyst at all.
