Abstract

1406942 Polypropylene/acrylic acid graft polymers EASTMAN KODAK CO 31 May 1973 [1 June 1972 26 Feb 1973] 26030/73 Heading C3G A graft polymer comprises polypropylene and 0À37 to 1À5% by weight, based on the polypropylene, of reacted unsaturated acid component, at least 75 mole per cent of which is acrylic acid, the graft polymer having a melt flow rate of from 15 to 175 g./10 minutes at 230‹ C. and being processable into a powder which can be applied to surfaces and fused to form coatings. The polypropylene has a conditioned density of 0À90 to 0À93 g./ml. and a melt flow rate of from 0À5 to 60À0 g./10 minutes at 230‹ C. Examples are given in which polypropylene pellets are coated with acrylic acid, or a mixture thereof with maleic anhydride, and initiator and extruded to yield a graft polymer which is pelletized and blended with 2,6- dioctadecyl-p-cresol and dilauryl dithiopropionate, ground and sprayed on to anti-corrosion treated steel panels, which are then heated to fuse the coating. Other stabilizers may be added to the graft polymer before it is ground and white and blue pigments are optionally added to form masterbatches which are blended with a further amount of the graft polymer.
