Abstract

1406844 Jet pipes-noise suppression panels SHORT BROS & HARLAND Ltd 29 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40719/72 Heading F1J [Also in Division F2] A sound absorbing panel, particularly suitable for use in gas turbine engines, comprises a perforate facing sheet 12 and an imperforate facing sheet 13 with a corrugated core 11 therebetween formed of inclined webs 14a, 15a connected by ridges 21. The webs 14a are unperforated and the webs 15a are perforated. Thus the imperforate walls 14a of the core 11 forms with the facing sheets 12, 13 a plurality of side-by-side resonating cavities. The perforate walls 15a form dividing members which divide each cavity into a first chamber 23 and a second chamber 24. The perforate facing sheet 12 is arranged so that sound impinges directly on its surface. The first chamber 23 acts as a resonator to absorb a first characteristic frequency and the first and second chambers 23, 24 together act as a resonator to absorb sound of a second characteristic frequency. Thus the chambers together absorb sound over a broad band of frequencies. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the core 11 is sinusoidal in cross-section or has the webs corrugated with flutes extending in a direction at right angles to the length of the ridges and terminating at each end a predetermined distance from the ridges. Any of these sound absorbing panels may be incorporated in the jet pipe 30 of a gas turbine engine 31 with the cavities extending in planes normal to the axis of the jet pipe 30 and so that the perforate facing sheet 12 presents a flowdefining surface for the exhaust gases. The noise attenuating performance of the panel may be enhanced by the addition of one or more partitions (37), Fig.5 (not shown) which extend axially along the jet pipe to divide each cavity into a number of circumferentially extending portions.
