Abstract

1405997 Dredging apparatus INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA LTD 5 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 56252/73 Heading E1F Mineral aggregates 26 lying on or just below the uper surface 25 of a submerged layer of silt are collected therefrom by an apparatus that compresses the aggregates lying on top of or projecting above the surface of the silt down into the silt, shears away and raises the upper, aggregate-containing layer of the silt, causes the silt of this layer to be washed away from the aggregates, and appropriately discharges the resultant concentration of aggregates. The apparatus comprises a body having a forwardly and upwardly inclined leading face 12 and a flat undersurface, a shearing blade 15 positioned below the body at the rear end thereof to extend over all or substantially all the width of the body, and a collecting and discharge duct 16 that extends upwards and rearwards from the blade to a coupling for a discharge pipe and has an apertured rear wall 27 that allows silt to pass out of the duct whilst the aggregates are retained therein. The aggregates may be discharged from the pipe into a separate, towed, aggregates-receiving container, or to aggregates-receivng means at the surface, or back onto the silt for subsequent collection by some other suitable means. The front wall 31 of the duct may be apertured to allow of entry of silt-flushing water or the water may enter the duct from a conduit 21 in which is situated a powered impeller 22. The intake of such a conduit 21 is preferably at a height above the leading face of the body as to ensure that water entering the conduit is substantially free from silt. The blade is united to the body by spaced, vertical gusset plates having downwardly and rearwardly inclined leading edges so as to form a grid with which a poweroperated, material-clearing comb can be associated. The blade may be straight or may have a straight central portion and forwardly extending wing portions. The weight and dimensions of the apparatus are such that the downpressure exerted by the apparatus on the silt is from 0.25 to 1.00 pounds per sq. in.
