Abstract

1405989 Automatic control of electric discharge machining AEG-ELOTHERM GmbH 25 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30073/73 Heading G3R A control system for a spark erosion machine automatically adjusts the tool feed to keep the pulse effect ratio constant at a pre-set reference level. The pulse effect ratio is defined as the ratio of the duration of erosive action to the total duration of the applied pulse. In the embodiment shown, pulses are produced by generator 1 and applied to the working gap between electrode 2 and workpiece 3 to provide a working pulse shape consisting of an ignition period (high voltage) followed by an erosion period (low voltage). A detector 5 comprising voltage comparators provides an output at 10 when working pulses are detected and an output at 18 when short or opencircuit conditions apply. Signal generator 6 provides an output which is proportional to the duration of the total pulse length within the cycle of pulses and feeds amplifier 9 whose output comprises voltage pulses which after passing through circuit 12 have an amplitude Vi proportional to the pulse effect ratio. This voltage is compared with the reference voltage Vs to produce an error signal Vr which is used to control the tool feed mechanism 17. When short or open circuits occur the voltage on line 19 is used to provide a control signal causing mechanism 17 to move the tool such that working conditions are restored.
