Abstract

1405980 Gas absorbing device for storage cell SOC FULMEN and COMPAGNIE EUROPEENNE D'ACCUMULATEURS 1 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 36683/73 Heading H1B A catalytic gas recombination device comprises a housing 1 mounted in the lid 3 of a storage battery easing so that its opening 4 is below the electrolyte level 14, the housing having a gas permeable section 8 of alumina. An inlet 5 is connected by a tube 6 to a cell 10 containing a mixture 7 of copper, ferric hydroxide and active carbon for absorbing toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, arsenic hydride, antimony hydride and sulphuretted hydrogen. The cell 10 has an outlet tube 9 for supplying the oxygen and hydrogen from the cell to a catlytic gas recombination cell 12 comprising a support of alumina impregnated with palladium. The water formed in the cell 12 returns through opening 4 to the battery. The heat generated in cell 12 maintains the cell 10 dry.
