Abstract

1405802 Vehicle for transporting special loads PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP 14 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 22841/73 Heading B7L A vehicle (sometimes called a schnabel car), for transporting a heavy load disposed between itself and a similar complementary vehicle, comprises a wheeled truck means including wheeled trucks 10, 11, 12 and 13 on a main longitudinal bolster 20, and a load-supporting body 30 disposed generally above the truck means to support at its rear end 32 the load to be transported by the vehicle and complementary vehicle (in a load-receiving structure 34, 35), the body 30 and truck means being interconnected by a body support means 40 and by a linkage 42 which controls transverse movement therebetween. The support means 40, Fig. 2, has a bearing 51 comprising mating part-spherical surfaces 52, 53 to allow yaw, pitch and roll of the body 30 relative to the truck means; roller means 68 disposed between platens 55, 65 to allow transverse movement of the body; and hydraulic jacks 69, (70) for vertical movement of the body. Two forms of linkage means 42 are described, both of which are extendable to allow the vertical movement of the body 30 and include lockable double-acting hydraulic cylinders which when unlocked can slide link means, which are attached to the body, in the transverse direction of the truck means, and thus laterally translate the body.
