Abstract

1405314 Filament feeding and storage device WESCO INDUSTRIES CORP 22 June 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 29806/73 Headings D1C D1E and D1F A filament feeding and storage device comprises a drum 18, support means for the drum, the support comprising a housing 14 fixed to a frame 12 and being open ended at one end to define a cavity 16 within which the drum 18 is removably supported, the outer contour of the drum and the confronting inner contour of the cavity being matingly shaped to define a radial gap 28 therebetween and prevent significant relative rotation between the drum and the support, and means for winding the filament about the drum adjacent one end thereof for forming on the drum a plurality of windings which advance toward the other end of the drum within the gap 28. The yarn is withdrawn axially through an aperture 42 in the housing 14. A tensioner comprising a ball 46 and socket 48 may be provided adjacent the aperture 42 or alternatively tension may be applied by passage of the yarn between the drum portion 22 and a seat 16b in the cavity 16. In an alternative embodiment, the drum 22 is spaced from the seat 16b but a portion 24 of the drum engages the upper peripheral edge 26 of the housing 14. The filament is wound on the drum by means of a yarn guide 38 fixed to a rotatable sleeve 34 which surrounds the housing 14. Means e.g. pivoted lever 52 may be provided for detecting the amount of filament wound on the drum and controlling rotation of the sleeve 34 accordingly. The mating contours may 'be oval, polygonal, or multi-lobal. The feeding and storage device finds particular application in knitting, weaving and spooling apparatus.
