Abstract
1404845 Coated products BAYER AG 3 Nov 1972 [6 Nov 1971] 50808/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as wire netting and tubes may be coated with a thermosetting powder coating composition which comprises a powdered mixture of (A) a copolymer (or a mixture of copolymers) having overall copolymerised units of (1) 25-70 wt. % of styrene, α-methyl styrene, o-chlorostyrene, p-chlorostyrene, p-t-butylstyrene, (meth)acrylonitrile or a mixture of two or more thereof; (2) 30-65 wt. % of a C 1-12 alcohol ester of acrylic acid or a C 2-12 alcohol ester of methacrylic acid or a mixture of two or more thereof; (3) 5-20 wt. % of acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, maleic, fumaric or crotonic acids or a mixture of two or more thereof and (4) 0-25 wt. % of methylmethacrylate, the sum of (1) to (4) being 100% and the average molecular weight being 3000 to 20000; and (B) one or more bis-or tris-(5, 6-dihydro-4H-1, 3-oxazines) of the general formula in which n = 1 or 2; R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are the same or different and each is H or a C 1-6 hydrocarbon group; and R<SP>6</SP> represents a bond (when n = 1) or (when n = 1 or 2) a di- or trivalent C 3-10 cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group; an optionally partially unsaturated C 1-18 di- or trivalent alkylene group which may optionally contain one or more C 6-10 aromatic hydrocarbon groups or one or more C 5-14 heterocyclic groups; a di- or trivalent radical comprising one or more optionally substituted C 6-12 aromatic hydrocarbon groups; or a di- or trivalent C 5-14 heterocyelic group; the mixture containing, for a total of 100 parts by wt., 5-25 parts by wt. of (B) and 95-75 parts by wt. of (A). One or more pigments and/or levelling agents may also be present. A list of suitable oxazines (B) is given in which n = 1 and n = 2 and in which R to R<SP>5</SP> are all H or some are -CH 3 , and also in which R<SP>6</SP> is alkylene, phenylene or a trivalent aliphatic group or trisubstituted benzene ring. No specific examples are given for the above substrates. Coating is achieved by electrostatic powder spraying, and then heating to fuse and cure the powder.
