Abstract

1404601 Vehicle bumpers DUNLOP Ltd 27 April 1973 [3 May 1972] 20503/72 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A shock absorber, e.g. for use as a vehicle bumper or for mounting a deformable vehiclebumper 1 of polymeric material, has a plate 3 sandwiched between two rubber members 6, 7 under pressure and having barbs embedded in the rubber surface (to tear it under impact) being movable in its own plane relative to the two members. The plate 3 and rubber members 6, 7 shown are elongated and extend along behind the bumper, being held together by bolts 8. The bolt holes (9) through the plate 3 are larger in crosssection that the bolt shanks and of semicircular form to allow relative movement of the plate 3, under impact conditions, in any direction through a 180 degree arc. The plate, and possibly the rubber strips 6, 7 may be ribbed, fluted or corrugated. The top and bottom margins of the deformable bumper 1 may extend over the edges of flanges on flanged plates 4, 5 by which the bumper assembly is attached to a vehicle.
