Abstract

1404573 Measuring the amount of liquid on a surface VICKERS Ltd 24 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 35048/71 Heading GIA [Also in Division G3] In a device for measuring the amount of liquid on a surface 3, e.g. water on a printing plate, light is reflected off the surface to be received by a photo-transistor 4 whose output has been previously calibrated with the aid of a movably standard medium 21 (or the surface itself without any liquid). The light beam may be pulsed with the aid of a rotating apertured disc 10 which may contain optical filters. A electronic circuit Fig. 3 (not shown) for the photo-transistor is disclosed wherein the photo-transistor is connected into a bridge circuit supplying a rectifier bridge feeding a meter, so that, in use, the bridge circuit which contains a variable resistor is adjusted when the standard medium is being illuminated until the meter reads zero, thereafter the photo-transistor &c. is used with the wet surface. A further electronic circuit, for a rotary printing press cylinder Fig. 4, 5, 6 (not shown) is disclosed comprising an inductive pick-off for sensing a predetermined angular position of the printing cylinder and providing pulses which are fed via a shaping circuit to a pulse generator which supplies a peak to peak detector and a sample and hold circuit. The peak to peak detector also receives the amplified output of the phototransistor measuring head circuit, the output of the sample and hold circuit supplying a meter and providing a signal for a control loop comprising a motor control with a motor which controls the flow of liquid on to a damp train roller which supplies the water to the printing cylinder.
