Abstract

1404467 Welding by fusion J ASHCROFT 5 Nov 1973 [12 Aug 1972] 37729/72 Heading B3R A backing gas chamber within pipes to be gas-shielded are welded end-to-end is defined by two sealing bungs each comprising an inflatable member 4, of rubber or resilient plastics, supported on an impervious member 2 preferably of metal (e.g. pressed steel) or rigid non-metal (e.g. plastics). Each bung has a passage 5 therethrough, that in one bung being connected to a source, such as 9, of inert gas e.g. argon) and that in the other bung providing for exhaust. The exhaust passage may be open, for continuous gas flushing, or provided with a valve, preferably spring-loaded and one-way to determine pressure level in the backing gas chamber. The exhaust passage may also have disposed therein an audible device signalling gas presence. One bung may have an inspection window. The bungs are coupled in tandem, by a means 10, and secured to a pusher rod 11 which may be supported in a cruciform member fitted in a pipe end. A roller arrangement 12 provides for tandem passage through the pipes. Each member 4 may be inflated by a simple foot pump or by compressed air. The means 10 may be rigid for straight pipe connections or flexible, e.g. a coil spring, for angular pipe connections.
