Abstract

140,442. Le Sort, H. T. M. March 18, 1919, [Convention date]. Modifying scale of readings, records, and integrations.-Relates to apparatus for obtaining movements, displacements, &c. proportional to the sines of angles, and consists in means whereby a shaft A rotating through an amount proportional to an angle causes another shaft B to rotate through an amount proportional to the sine of the angle. The shaft A drives the satellite ring of a differential mechanism and a fusee D of sinusoidal longitudinal section having teeth arranged in a helical manner thereon adapted to engage a pinion 35 (radius r<1>) on a shaft C which drives one of the wheels of the differential mechanism, the other wheel of which drives the shaft B. The curve representing the section of the fusee is obtained from the formula r = r<1> (2 - Cos a). To maintain the pinion 35 in engagement with the toothed spiral of the fusee, as it is moved along the shaft 37 by means of a slider and nut 46 engaging the screw-threaded portion 45 of a shaft 42 rotated by the shaft A, the axle 29 of the fusee is mounted in a sliding frame 30 which is reciprocated by means of eccentric pins 59, 68 on the disks 58, 67 attached to the toothed wheel 57, 66 as the wheel 57 is rotated through bevel and worm gearing connected to the shaft 42. The apparatus is more particularly intended for use with a mechanism as described in Specification 140.441, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.], for solving spherical triangles, out it may also be used for calculating sines as a substitute for usual tables or in connexion with gun-sighting apparatus.
