Abstract
1403863 Carbon fibre composites UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 18 Oct 1972 [23 July 1971] 34617/71 Heading C1A Carbon fibre composites are prepared by contacting carbon fibres or tapes with a suspension comprising a hydrophobic liquid as continuous phase and a disperse phase comprising a dispersion of inert metal, alloy or ceramic particles in an inert hydrophilic liquid, immiscible with and having a lower density than the hydrophobic liquid to form a coating of the suspension on the carbon fibres, removing the hydrophobic and hydrophilic liquids from the carbon fibres and consolidating the coated carbon fibres, e.g. by pressing or extrusion, to form the composite. In the consolidation step temperatures of 800-850‹ C. or 1100-1200‹ C. may be used. The hydrophilic liquid may be water. The hydrophobic liquid may be trichloroethane or trichloroethylene. The solid particles may be copper, bronze and lead. Particles up to 40 microns in diameter are most suitable. Where the solid particles are ceramic particles, they preferably do not exceed 75 microns in diameter. Suitable ceramic materials include alumina, " Pyrex " (Registered Trade Mark) glass, lithium-alumino-silicate glass ceramics, and other oxides, glasses and glass ceramics of one or more of lithium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica, titanium dioxide and boron oxide. " Coralline " (Registered Trade Mark) and " Cranco " (Registered Trade Mark) binders may be used.
