Abstract
1403600 Air cushion vehicles R W SCHNEIDER 5 Dec 1972 56063/72 Heading B7K An air cushion vehicle having a power plant driving two axial flow fans driven at constant speed one supplying cushion air and the other delivering air to forward propulsion and reverse thrust nozzles comprises a looped flexible skirt 48, positioned beneath buoyancy chambers 56 and apertured at 52 so that air delivered through duct 50 by a fan 34 drawing from lateral air intake 30 may form a supporting cushion. Fan 34 is mounted on one end of a shaft 86 which carries a belt drive 84 from an engine 82 the other end of the shaft carrying a further fan 32 which draws air from air intake 28 and delivers it through duct 58 to a propulsion nozzle formed by ducts 60, 62 or to a reverse thrust nozzle 64. Selection of discharge is provided by a plate valve 66 hinged at 68 and operated by a control run from the cockpit 12 so that with the valve in the full line position in Fig. 5, all the air from fan 32 provides forward propulsion. When in the dotted line position air is directed forwardly as indicated by arrow 78 with a proportion, arrow 80, passing out of duct 60 to flow past vanes 44 which are controlled from the cockpit to provide directional control.
