Abstract

1403463 Lubricants CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 29 March 1973 [17 April 1972] 15277/73 Heading C5F A grease comprises a lubricating oil, a " polyurea '' thickening additive and an alkaline earth metal carboxylate. The "polyurea " is defined as a compound having a mol. wt. of 350-2500 AMU's and 1 to 8 ureido (i.e. -HN-CO-NH-) groups, and is present in an amount at least sufficient to thicken the oil to grease consistency in the presence of the carboxylate, but less than that required in the absence of the carboxylate. The proportion of polyurea may be 0À5-10 wt. per cent, and that of carboxylate 3-30 wt. per cent. Many polyureas are specified. The invention also comprises a concentrate for the grease comprising 10-30 wt. per cent of the polyurea and 20-50 wt. per cent of the carboxylate (1-3 carbon atoms) in the lubricating oil. The grease may be made by mixing a diisocyanate a diamine and a monoisocyanate or monoamine with the base oil, heating to form the urea in situ, then adding a monocarboxylic acid and metal oxide or hydroxide to form the carboxylate in situ, and working to a grease consistency. Many urea-forming and carboxylateforming ingredients, natural and synthetic base oils, and conventional additives are listed.
