Abstract

1402616 Automatic electric control of template tracer stylus velocity GETTYS Mfg CO Inc 20 July 1972 34061/72 Heading G3N In a template tracing system the stylus velocity is controlled by co-ordinate control voltages produced by stylus deflection and these voltages are modified to make the tangential velocity (tracing speed) of the stylus equal a predetermined value. As shown, the stylus deflection signals are applied to a motor control circuit 12 to control the co-ordinate drive motors 10A, 10B in the usual way. A multiplier is included within the control circuit where the control signals are multiplied by the tangential velocity correction signal M. Tachometers 14A, 14B provide signals representing the co-ordinate velocity signals VA, VB in magnitude and these D.C. signals are modulated at a reference frequency, e.g. 1000 Hz, in modulators 17A, 17B with the output of modulator 17A phase shifted by 90 degrees. These signals V'A, VB are added at 22 to produce velocity vector V which is filtered at 23. Demodulator 24 is supplied with an A.C. signal representative of the actual deflection of the stylus P so that a D.C. signal output is produced which is proportional to the magnitude of the tangential velocity (Vt) of the stylus. This voltage is compared in comparator 27 with a signal representing the desired tracing speed to provide an error signal which after integration, by a capacitor or by a motor driven potentiometer arrangement, is used to modify the motor control signals.
